石田三成。処刑前に「腹を壊したくないから」と柿を断る
フィギュアスケートの王者、羽生結弦選手の言葉に「努力は嘘をつく。でも無駄にはならない。必ずしも報われるとは限らないけれども努力はすべきである」というものがある。
彼のような多くの努力をするトップアスリートでさえ、すべての努力が報われるわけではないという現実を知っているのだ。それでも、その努力が無駄になることは決してない。深い。なんと深い言葉だ。
まったく話はかわるけれど、戦国武将に、石田三成という武将がいる。彼は関ヶ原の戦いで敗れ、最終的には処刑された。処刑前、柿を勧められた石田三成は、「腹を壊したくないから」と断ったエピソードがある。
これも本当にすごい話だ。これは日常の会話でなく、処刑前の会話だ。なんていう冷静さと決意。どんなに厳しい状況でも、自分の信念を貫き通す姿勢を感じる。
自分の信念を貫き通し、その結果としての運命を受け入れる。「この道より我を生かす道なし」と覚悟を決める。すごいなあ。

Even a top athlete like him, who puts in so much effort, knows that not all efforts are rewarded. But the effort is never in vain. Profound. What profound words.
On a completely different note, there was a military commander in the Warring States period named Ishida Mitsunari. He was defeated in the battle of Sekigahara and eventually executed. Before his execution, Ishida Mitsunari was offered persimmons, but he refused, saying he did not want to ruin his stomach.
This is another amazing story. This is not an everyday conversation, but a conversation before execution. What calmness and determination. I feel that no matter how difficult the situation, he is determined to stick to his convictions.
One sticks to one’s convictions and accepts the resulting fate. I am so impressed.
