「おじさん」とは年齢ではなく「属性」だ

今、自分は45歳。新しいことに挑戦するとき「おじさんが！？」など言われる年になった。

ただ先日読んだ何かの小説に、「おじさん」とは年齢ではなく属性だというすばらしい文言があった。年齢に関係なく、挑戦を恐れず、好奇心旺盛であれば「おじさん」ではない。逆に、若くてもチャレンジを避ける人はもう立派な「おじさん」だ。

例えば、最近のYouTubeには、年齢を問わず、自分の好きなことに夢中になっている人たちがたくさんいる。それもプロフェッショナルの方だけでなく、素人の方がたくさんいる。そんな方々を見ると、「おじさん」とはまさに属性なのだと感じる。何かをやろう！「おじさん」とは年齢ではなく「属性」だ！

‘aged man’ is an attribute, not an age.
I am 45 years old now. When I try something new, I’m now at an age where people say things like ‘you can’t do it, old man’.

But in a novel I read the other day, there was a wonderful line that said ‘aged man’ is not an age, it is a quality. Whatever your age, if you are not afraid of challenges and are curious, you are not an ‘aged man’. Conversely, if you are young but avoid challenges, you are already a great ‘aged man’.

For example, there are a lot of people on YouTube these days, regardless of age, who are passionate about what they love to do. And not just professionals, but also many amateurs. Let’s do something! ‘aged man’ is not an age, it is a quality!
