「大きくなったらわかる」は禁句
つい先日、うちの子供と「夢」の話になった。
江戸の有名な教育者、吉田松陰は「夢なきものに実行なし」という名言を残している。夢を持たない人は何も成し遂げることができない。夢を持つことは、何かを達成するための大切な原動力になる。これは間違いなく真実だろう。
ちなみに、他人の意見や評価に左右されず、自分の心から湧き上がる夢を持つというのは、とっても難しい。夢を考えるときも、どうしても他の人と比べて感がてしまう。他人と比べて小さい夢でも、それが自分の夢ならば、その夢を追いかけることが大切だ。自分だけの特別な夢。見つけるのは容易ではなけれど、これが自分の人生を豊かにする。
自分もふくめ、大人はよく「そんなことしてたら、大人になったら後悔する」「大人になったらわかる」と言うような言葉を使う。でもこれ、子供たちにとっては、「は！？」だ。子供たちにとって一番大切なのは「今」で、今この瞬間に感じていること、考えていること、やりたいことの方が重要。だからこそ、本当は夢や目標をしっかり持つことが大事なのだけれど、それを説明するのが本当に難しい。というか、自分もできていないので、今が大切だからこそ夢を持つことの大切さをなんとか自分に刷り込みたいのだけれど、本当に難しい。
吉田松陰のような、燃えたぎるように熱い方でなくても、夢を持つことはとても大切だ。他人と比べることなく、自分の心から湧き上がる夢。どこにある？？？

‘You’ll understand when you grow up’ is a no-no
The other day my children and I were talking about ‘dreams’.
Yoshida Shoin, a famous educator from the Edo period, famously said: ‘Those who have no dream have no action’. People who have no dreams cannot achieve anything. Having a dream is an important driving force to achieve something. This is definitely true.
Incidentally, it is very difficult to have a dream that comes from your own heart and is not influenced by the opinions and judgements of others. When we think about our dreams, we inevitably compare our dreams with those of others. Even if your dream is small compared to others, if it is your dream, it is important to pursue it. A dream that is special to you and you alone. It is not easy to find, but it will enrich your life.
Adults, myself included, often say things like “If you do this, you will regret it when you grow up” or “You will understand when you grow up”. But for children it is like “What? The most important thing is ‘now’ and what they are feeling, thinking and wanting to do at that moment is more important. That is why it is really important to have firm dreams and goals, but it is really difficult to explain. Or rather, I haven’t been able to do it myself, so I want to somehow impress upon myself the importance of having dreams because the present is important, but it’s really difficult.
Even if you are not a fiery person like Shoin Yoshida, it is very important to have a dream. A dream that comes from your own heart, without comparison to others. Where is it?
