あらためて、今年、トライアスロンの長い版、ウルトラマラマンハワイに申し込んだ。

距離はスイム10km、バイク420kmほど、ラン84kmほど　の合計515km

友人に誘われ、軽い気持ちで去年申し込んだウルトラマンカナダ。最初この距離だけ聞いたときは、本当にいけるのかなと思ったけれど、去年は無事完走できた。

この距離をやり抜くにはもちろんある程度の体力が必要だけれど、それよりも心の持ち方がとっても重要だ。

こういったロングのレースのコツは、いけるとこまで行く。着いたらもうちょっと行く。またもうちょっと行く。それを淡々と繰り返すこと。遠くを見ない。1kmの繰り返す。5kmの繰り返す。まだ200kmある。そんなこと思わない。1kmの繰り返す。5kmの繰り返す。

515kmの全体の距離だけは念頭にいれながら、意識は常にちょっと先。すると、結局は知らぬ間についている。

おそらく、人生もそうで、長期目標は大切だけれど、長期だけ見ててもやっていけない。かといって、長期目標を設定せず足元だけ見てても、絶対に長期目標には届かない。

長期目標は、夜空に輝く北極星のように、自分の目指す方向の指針として必ずもちながら、いけるとこまで行く。着いたらもうちょっと行く。またもうちょっと行く。それがやっぱり、一見無理だと思える目標に到達するコツかもしれない。

Go as far as you can. When you get there, go a little further. And then go a little further.
This year I signed up again for the Ultra Maraman Hawaii, a longer version of the triathlon.

The distance is 10km swim, 420km bike and 84km run for a total of 515km.

I signed up for Ultraman Canada last year after being invited by a friend. When I first heard about the distance, I wondered if I could do it, but I was able to complete the race.

It takes a lot of physical and mental strength to do it. The trick to this kind of long run is to repeat 1km, repeat 5km, repeat 5km. Go as far as you can. When you get there, keep going. Go a little further. Repeat without hesitation. Don’t look far.

Just think of the total distance of 515 km as a sensation, but be aware that you are just a little bit further, just a little bit further. Then, in the end, you get there before you know it.

Maybe it’s the same in life: long-term goals are important, but you can’t do it if you only look at the long term. On the other hand, if you just look at your feet without setting long-term goals, you will never reach your long-term goals.

You have to have a long-term goal to guide you, like the North Star shining in the night sky, and go as far as you can. When you get there, go a little further. And then go a little further. That may be the trick to achieving a seemingly impossible goal.
