世界屈指のカーライルグループ共同創業者のデイヴィッド・M・ルーベンシュタイン氏が、何がリーダーたちを突き動かすか、大きな興味をいだき、ピア・トゥ・ピアという番組で、政界、財界、文化界の著名なリーダーたちにインタビューをしたのをまとめた本「世界を変えた31人の人生の講義」を読んだ。
弁護士、大統領補佐官、投資ファンドの共同創業者、慈善活動家、インタビュアー、評論家としての活動してきたデイヴィッド・M・ルーベンシュタイン氏。なんという贅沢さ。
起業家のほとんどが37歳までに会社を立ち上げる傾向にあり、その年齢を過ぎてから創業するケースはほとんどない。この事実を知った私は、そのとき37歳だった。（デイヴィッド・M・ルーベンシュタイン）
まず序文のデイヴィッド・M・ルーベンシュタイン氏がさまざまなリーダーをインだビューすることによって得たリーダーに必要な13の要素だけでも十分本になる。
１、運をつかむ
成功したリーダーたちは、誰もが今日に至る過程で幸運に恵まれたのはほぼ間違いない。
２、成功を強く願う
リーダーはまた、何か大きなことを成し遂げよう、世界にその足跡を残そう、人のためになる価値ある製品やサービスを生み出そうといった、成功への強い思いを持たねばならない。
３、新しい、独自なものを追求する
大抵リーダーは、何かを作り上げたり生み出したり、つまりまだ人が足を踏み入れてない場所を目指したがる。
４、長い時間、懸命に働く
リーダーになる近道はない。仕事に取り組み、その仕事で注目される本当のリーダーになるには、長時間、懸命に働くしかない。週5日、朝９時から５時まで働くだけでは不十分だけでは、必要とされるスキルを習得するのは不可能だ。自分よりも才能があり、頭の切れる人物などいくらでもいる。彼らと競い合う方法はただひとつ。彼らより長い時間、真剣に働くしかない。だがこれは私が身をもって実感したことだが、ワーカホリックをプラスに作用させるには、その人が仕事とはまったく関係のない、日頃の金c王をほぐしてくれるような経験や楽しみ、そして知的喜びをあたえてくれるものに興味をもたなければならない。アインシュタインもまたそうした欲求に駆られ、毎日バイオリンを演奏し、毎年なるになるとボートを操って海に出ていたものだ。
５、集中する
ひとつのスキルを完璧に習得するか、あるいはほとつのテーマについて完全に理解しようと努めること。それについてはあなたが第一人者だと周りの誰もが認め、信頼されるようになったら次の分野に手を広げよう。私がカーライルで取り組もうと決めたのは、アメリカ国内、あるいは世界で行う投資案件をさらに増やすための資金の調達だった。そろがうまくできるようになったところで、企業に必要な別の問題に取り組むようにしたのである。
６、失敗を前向きにとらえる
どんなリーダーでも意図どならず失敗を犯す。失敗とは道を踏み誤ったために起こるもので、今回の失敗もそうした理由によると証明すれば良い。失敗は、人に謙虚な姿勢をもたらすと同時に、次は成功するのだという強い思いを抱かせてくれる。
７、粘り強く取り組む
元来リーダーは、新しく、他では見られないものに取り組もうとしがちだ。そのため現状を肯定し、変化を望まない人たちから抵抗を受けやすい。大切なのは、あなたが望む変化に対して、周りがそれを否定したりしても、最後までやり抜くことだ。カーライルはワシントンD.Cの有形固定資産などの非金融示唆さんを扱う企業であり、決してグローバルな企業にはなり得ないと、誰もが口をそろえて語った。だが私はそう言われれば言われるほど、自分の夢と大いなる望みを追い続けようと深く心に決めたのである。
８、説得力をもって話をする
そもそもついてくる人間がいなければ、リーダーシップも発揮のしようがない。リーダーは三種類の基本的なコミュニケーション手段を用いて、人をリードしなければならない。すなわち、文章で読み手を発奮させ、言葉で聞き手をやる気にさせ、自ら模範を示して人を引っ張っていくのだ。言い方を変えれば物事をどうとらえ、いかに行動すべきか、その特徴や利点をきちんと説明し、納得させてくれる人物に人はついていく。前述した３つの手段すべてに長けたリーダーなど、そういるものではない。だが私は何円も練習を重ね、試行錯誤を繰り返しながら、基本的な話し方や文章能力を向上させ、願わくは人を牽引できるような行動を心がけている。
９、控えめに振る舞う
長いあいだ影響力を失わずに活躍でkりうリーダーには謙虚さが備わっている。謙虚だからこそ彼らは自分の弱さを認識し、幸運に恵まれてきたと実感できるのだ。
１０、仕事の成果を分かち合う
力の有能なリーダーは、仕事の成果を分かち合う気持ちさえあれば、偉大なことが成し遂げられると知っている。「勝利には100人の父親がいるが、敗北は孤児である」とはジョン・F・ケネディの言葉だ。ロナルド・レーガンにも同じような言葉がある「すすんで成果を分かち合おうという気持ちさえあれば、人間のやることに限界はない」物事がうまくいったときはできる限り手柄を分け合い、失敗したときには皆で責任をとる、あるいは自分が責任を引き受ける、これに克穂やり方はないと、私は身をもって体験してきた。
１１、学び続ける姿勢をもつ
リーダーは日々、自分の知識を深めていく。すなわちたぐいまれな筋肉である、自らの脳を鍛えていく必要がある。それを怠れば、世界の急激な変化や増え続ける膨大な情報量に対応していくのは難しく、到底、物事に精通したリーダーにはなれないだろう。私が続けてきた学びの方法は、ひたすら活字を読むことだ。新聞は毎日６紙に目を通し、雑誌は最低でも１０冊は手に取り、書籍は必ず週に一冊、たいてい、３、４冊並行して読むようにしている。決して良書だけ読もうと心掛けているわけではない。
１２、誠実であれ
名声を築くには一生かかるが、失うには５分もあれば事足りる。倫理観を決しておろそかにしてはならない。そうすればさらに有能なリーダーになれるだろう。
１３、危機に立ち向かう
リーダーが最も必要とされるのは、世の中が聞き的状況に陥ったときである。私もまた、期せずして会社の財政がひっ迫したときには必死に働き、よりコミュニケーションを図りつつ、社員たちのやる気を引き出そうと努めたものだ。

The 13 elements necessary for a leader, which David M. Rubenstein has gathered from his interviews with various leaders in the foreword alone, are enough to make a book.
1, Seize your happiness.
It is almost certain that every successful leader has been lucky in the process of getting to where they are today.
2, Have a strong desire to succeed.
Leaders must also have a strong desire to succeed – to achieve something great, to leave their mark on the world, to create a valuable product or service that will benefit others.
3, Pursue something new and unique.
Leaders usually want to build or create something – to go where no one has gone before.
4, Work long and hard.
There are no shortcuts to leadership. The only way to become a real leader, someone who is committed to their work and gets noticed for it, is to work long and hard. It is impossible to learn the skills you need unless you work from 9am to 5pm, five days a week. There are plenty of people who are more talented and smarter than you. There is only one way to compete with them. The only way to compete with them is to work longer and harder than they do. But I have found that for a workaholic to have a positive effect, he or she needs to be interested in things that have nothing to do with work, things that give him or her experience, enjoyment and intellectual pleasure that can relieve the daily gold cows. Einstein, too, was driven by this desire, playing the violin every day and sailing his boat out to sea every year.
5, Focus.
Strive to master a skill perfectly or to understand a subject completely. When everyone around you recognises and trusts you as the guru in that area, then move on to the next. What I decided to work on at Carlisle was raising more money to do more investment projects in the US and around the world. Once I had done that successfully, I set about tackling other issues that the company needed to address.
6, Embrace failure.
Every leader makes mistakes, no matter what their intentions. Failure is the result of a wrong turn, and that failure may prove to be due to such reasons. Failure brings humility and a strong desire to succeed next time.
7, Persistence and Commitment.
By nature, leaders tend to try to work on what is new and unique. This makes them vulnerable to resistance from those who support the status quo and do not want to change. The key is to stick with the change you want, even when those around you are against it. Everyone said that Carlyle was a company that dealt with non-financial proposals, such as physical assets in Washington D.C., and that it could never be a global company. But the more I was told, the more I decided to pursue my dreams and high hopes.
8, Speak convincingly.
Without people to follow, there is no way to lead. Leaders must use three basic means of communication to lead. In other words, they must inspire the reader with what they write, motivate the listener with what they say, and lead by example. In other words, people will follow a person who can explain and convince them of the characteristics and benefits of how they should perceive things and how they should act. There are not many leaders who are good at all three of these tools. However, I have practised and tried many times to improve my basic speaking and writing skills and, hopefully, to lead others.
9, Be humble.
Leaders who are able to remain influential for a long time have a sense of humility. Humility allows them to recognise their own weaknesses and to acknowledge their good fortune.
10, Share the fruits of their work
Effective leaders know that great things can be achieved if they are willing to share the fruits of their work. Victory has a hundred fathers, but defeat is an orphan,” said John F. Kennedy. Ronald Reagan said something similar: “There are no limits to what men can do, as long as they are willing to share their accomplishments. I have experienced this first hand.
- Keep learning
Leaders deepen their knowledge every day. In other words, they need to exercise their own brain, which is a unique muscle. If you fail to do this, you will find it difficult to keep up with the rapid changes in the world and the ever-increasing volume of information, and you will never become a well-informed leader. The way I have continued to learn is by reading the printed word. I read six newspapers a day, at least ten magazines, and I always read a book a week, usually three or four at a time. I never try to read only good books.
12, Be honest.
It takes a lifetime to build a reputation, but only five minutes to lose it. Never neglect your ethics. It will make you a more effective leader.
13, Confront crises.
Leaders are needed most when the world is in crisis. I have also worked hard when the company’s finances were unexpectedly tight, trying to motivate my people to work harder and communicate better.
