連日、橘玲さんの本「スピリチュアルズ　「わたし」の謎」に、人のパーソナリティを表すビックファイブ（経験への開放性、堅実性、協調性、情動の安定性、外交性）の判定基準がのっていた。こんな簡単な質問で、より詳しい性格判定基準との一致率は84％といわれる。

①と②は経験への解放性、③と④は堅実性、⑤と⑥は協調性、⑦と⑧は情動の安定性、⑨と⑩は外交性にかかわる。それぞれのペアごとに奇数番号のスコアから偶数番号のスコアを引き算し、ビックファイブに対応するスコアを計算する。スコアは「マイナス４（とても低い）」から「プラス４」までの幅がある。①と②の計算結果がプラス４なら「経験への解放性が高い」、マイナス４なら「経験への解放性が低い」となる。

やってみると、自分は経験への解放性４、堅実性０、協調性３、情動の安定性３、外交性４だった。この性格判断はとっても面白い。うちの妻にもやってみたけれど、ほぼあたった。

なお、現代の高度化する知識社会で、「成功するパーソナリティ」として要求されるのは次の３つだという。

「高い知能」＋「高い堅実性」＋「高い情動の安定性（低い神経症傾向）」

これに「高い外交性」と「魅力的な外見」が加わると、政治家として一国のトップにあったり、グローバル企業のCEOとして活躍できるかもしれない。

また現代社会で、以下の知能が必要だという。

情動的知能「高い知能　＋　高い堅実性」自己コントロール力　

社会的知能「高い知能　＋高い共感力」社会のなかでさまざまなひとと上手にやっていける能力

なお、成功するパーソナリティは時代とともに変化し、本書にもこう書いてある

人類がこれまで体験したこののないほど安定した現代社会では「今日は昨日と同じで、明日は今日と同じ」という前提で生きていった方がずっと有利だろう。そう考えれば、一部のスターを除けば「高い知能＋低い経験への解放性」の保守的なパーソナリティの方がうまくいくかもしれない。

自分は経験への解放性はあるが、堅実性はない。感情の浮き沈みがあり、気分屋。ただ、自己コントロール力に関しては、人よりあるほうだと思う。そして、外交的ではあるが飽きやすい。知能は高くも低くもない。そんなところだ。

橘さんは、これは一喜一憂するものじゃなく、これをもとに自分のパーソナリティにあった仕事や生活をすれば、生活がより楽になると言っている。最後、本書の「おわりに」でも橘さんはこう締め括っている

The Big Five (Openness to Experience, Steadiness, Cooperativeness, Emotional Stability, Diplomacy) test of a person’s personality.
Akira Tachibana’s book ‘Spirituals: The Mystery of “I”‘ contained the criteria for the Big Five (openness to experience, steadfastness, cooperativeness, emotional stability and diplomacy), which describe a person’s personality. This simple question is said to have an 84% agreement rate with more detailed personality criteria.

Please score the following personality statements (1) to (10) on a scale of 1 to 5

1 point = strongly disagree
2 points = Slightly disagree
3 points = neither agree nor disagree
4 points = I agree a little
5 points = strongly agree

(1) I have active skills.

(4) Tends to be lazy

(1) and (2) relate to openness to experience, (3) and (4) to solidity, (5) and (6) to cooperativeness, (7) and (8) to emotional stability, and (9) and (10) to diplomacy. For each pair, subtract the even-numbered score from the odd-numbered score and calculate the score corresponding to the Big Five. The scores range from ‘minus four (very low)’ to ‘plus four’. If the results of the calculations in (1) and (2) are plus 4, the release to experience is ‘high’ and minus 4 is ‘low’.

When I tried it, I found that I was 4 in openness to experience, 0 in solidity, 3 in cooperativeness, 3 in emotional stability and 4 in diplomacy. This personality assessment is very interesting. I tried it on my wife and it was almost right.

In today’s increasingly sophisticated knowledge society, the following three things are required for a successful personality.

High intelligence + high solidity + high emotional stability (low neuroticism).

Add to this ‘high diplomacy’ and ‘attractive appearance’ and you could be at the top of a country as a politician or as a CEO of a global company.

They also need the following intelligences in modern society.

Emotional intelligence ‘high intelligence + high steadiness’ Self-control　

Social intelligence “High intelligence + high empathy” Ability to get along with various people in society.

Creative intelligence “high intelligence + high openness to experience” Innovative, Steve Jobs and Elon Musk.

Note that successful personalities change over time, and this book also states

In the most stable modern society mankind has ever experienced, it would be much more advantageous to live on the premise that ‘today is the same as yesterday and tomorrow will be the same as today’. In this light, conservative personalities with ‘high intelligence + low openness to experience’ might work better, except for a few stars.

I have openness to experience but not solidity. I have emotional ups and downs and am moody. However, when it comes to self-control, I think I have more than others. And although I am diplomatic, I get bored easily. My intelligence is neither high nor low. That’s about it.

Tachibana says that this is not something to be happy or sad about, and that if you use this as a basis for working and living in a way that suits your personality, life will be easier. Finally, in the “Conclusion” of this book, Ms Tachibana also concludes

Self-searching, when you get right down to it, is about creating your own character (personality) and a story that fits it. Perhaps there is no other meaning to life.
