海での泳ぎ。オープンウォーターは、8割は精神力
海での泳ぎ。世界中には７オーシャンというものがある。世界中にある７つの海峡。場所によるけれど、だいたい30kmから40km程度、世界にある７海峡を泳ぎ切ること。自分としては、７つすべてでなく、その中のどこか一つを泳いで渡りたいと思っている。
今まで泳いだことがあるのは、ウェットスーツなしでタイの海の10kmと、ウェットスーツありで、先日のカナダの湖10km。ウェットスーツは浮き輪みたいなもので、体が浮くのでまず溺れない。そしてスイムもダントツ早くなる。オープンウォーターは基本ウェットスーツはNG。自分の体だけで、泳ぎ切る必要がある。
そんなウェットスーツなしのオープンウォーター。まず何より一番厄介なのが寒さ。水温が冷たいと本当にパニックになる。心臓がキュッと締め付けられる。足がつるぐらいなら、泳いでいるうちにほぐせるからまったくパニックにはならないけれど、水温は本当にやばい。
オープンウォーターをやられている方に聞くと、オープンウォーターは実力よりも何よりも、8割精神力だという。どんな状況でもパニックにならないように、リラックスして泳げないとまず達成できない。よく睡眠をとって体を最善の状態にしておくことは勿論のこと、あとは、自分が必ずできると自己暗示することだという。
水温があったかくなるとサメとクラゲ。水温が冷たい海峡は、潮の流れが強かったりと、一長一短、どこも一筋縄ではいかなそうだ。

Swimming in the sea. Open water is 80% mental strength
Swimming in the ocean. There are seven straits around the world. Depending on the location, have to swim through about 30km to 40km long. For me, I would like to swim across one of them, not all seven.
I have swum 10km in the sea in Thailand without a wetsuit and 10km in a lake in Canada with a wetsuit. Wetsuit makes the swim a lot faster. In open water, wetsuits are basically a not allow : you have to swim the whole distance with just your body.
Open water without a wetsuit. First and foremost, the most annoying thing is the cold. When the water temperature is cold, really start to panic. The heart tightens up. If you have cramps in feet, can loosen them while swimming, but the water temperature is really bad.
People who have done open water say that open water is 80% mental strength, more than anything else, more than competence. If you can’t swim relaxed and not panic in any situation, you won’t be able to achieve it. As well as getting a good night’s sleep and keeping your body in tip-top shape, the rest, he says, is self-assurance that you will be able to do it.
Sharks and jellyfish when the water temperature is warm. In straits where the water temperature is cooler, the tides are stronger and so on, and it seems that it is not a simple matter of one size fits all.
