つまるところテイストの話。It’s all about taste

14年ほど新宿と銀座でメガネ屋をやっている。取り扱っているメガネの種類はヴィンテージから現行品まで様々。

同じクオリティのメガネでもヴィンテージと現行品ではまったく値段が違う。 例えば、アメリカのブランド、タート。タートのアーネル44/24のアンバーは、ただのウェリントンのメガネなのに、ジョニーデップがかけたことにより一気に高騰、現行の同型のメガネの10倍〜20倍ほどのの値段になっている。

ヴィンテージのタートが素材が良いわけでも、作りが良いわけでもない。

以前フィレンツェのヴィンテージ衣料店で1900年初頭のワーキングジャケットということで、穴あきぼろぼろのジャケットが5万ぐらいでついつい買っちゃったんだけれど、帰ってきたら、なんでそんな服着てるの？と会う人会う人に言われた。

ヴィンテージといっても、極論でいってしまえば、ボロ布だ。そこに理由をつけて価値をつけていく。さまざまな理由をつけて付加価値をつけていく。ヴィンテージは、いかにテイストに価値をつけるか。つまるところテイストの話。

It’s all about taste

I have been running eyeglass shops in Shinjuku and Ginza for about 14 years. The type of glasses we carry varies from vintage to current.

The prices of glasses of the same quality are totally different between vintage and current ones. Take, for example, the American brand Tart. Tart’s Arnell 44/24 amber glasses are just a pair of Wellington glasses, but since Johnny Depp wore them, the price has skyrocketed to 10 to 20 times the price of the current model of the same type of glasses.A vintage tart is not necessarily made of good material, nor is it well made.

I once bought a tattered jacket with holes for about 50,000 yen at a vintage clothing store in Florence, which was a working jacket from the early 1900’s. When I got home, everyone I met asked me why I was wearing that.

Vintage is, in the extreme, rags. We add value to it by giving reasons. We add value to it by giving various reasons. Vintage is about how to add value to taste. It is all about taste.
