ロサンゼルスに“物語のための美術館”を作っているという。

総事業費、10億ドル（約1550億円）。

資金源は、ルーカスが全額出資。

収蔵作品、4万点以上。

デザインは、マ・ヤンソン（馬岩松）率いるMAD Architects。

まるで宇宙船のような、自然とアートが融合した建物だ。

2026年9月22日、オープン。

80歳。 1550億円。 10年以上の歳月。

そして、3つの都市での挫折。

2013年にサンフランシスコで提案したが、却下された。

次にシカゴに決めたのに、保存団体が裁判で反対し、断念。

やっとロサンゼルスで着工すれば、パンデミックで工事が止まった。

普通なら諦める。 80歳なら尚更だ。

シカゴ案が白紙に戻った時、妻のメロディ・ホブソンが聞いた。

「（このプロジェクトを）続ける価値がある？」

彼は答えた。

「私は生きているうちにこの美術館を建てるよ！」

これだ。

これがカッコよすぎる。

彼は子供たちに見せたいのだ。

そこは、低所得者層の生徒が通う学校が18校もある地域。

物語の力を、ちゃんと届けたい。

彼が作った物語が、世界中の人にどれだけの価値を与えたか。

ルーカスの美術館は2026年9月22日に開く。

その時、彼は82歳になっている。

きっとその日、彼は入口に立つ。

George Lucas’s words shook me.

George Lucas.
The man who created Star Wars and Indiana Jones is building a museum in Los Angeles —
a museum dedicated to stories.

A total project cost of 1 billion dollars (about 155 billion yen).
Entirely funded by Lucas himself.
More than 40,000 works in the collection.
Designed by Ma Yansong and MAD Architects.
A building that looks like a spaceship, blending art and nature.

Opening on September 22, 2026.

In 2013, San Francisco rejected the proposal.
Then Chicago was chosen, but a preservation group fought it in court, and the plan died.
Construction finally began in Los Angeles — only for the pandemic to shut it down.

Most people would give up.
Especially at 80.

But according to The Wall Street Journal,
when the Chicago plan collapsed, his wife Mellody Hobson asked:

“Is this project still worth continuing?”

Lucas replied:

“I’ll build this museum while I’m still alive!”

He wants children to see it.
The museum will stand in a neighborhood with 18 schools serving low-income students.
He wants to share the power of stories.
