山道を汗をかきながら登っていると、ふと木々の切れ間から、目の前に頂が見えることがある。「あそこまで行けば、ひとまず終わりだ」。そう思って最後の力を振り絞る。ようやくたどり着いたその場所から見えるのは、安らかな下り道ではなく、さらにその奥に、あるいは遥か高くにそびえる、次の山の姿だったりする。

この感覚を、明治の文豪・徳冨蘆花は、人生そのものになぞらえて、実に見事に言い表している。

「人生を百とすれば、五十は半端。私は峠に来ました。峠といっても向こうは檻とは決まりません。ヤコブの夢の天にかける梯のように、山の上にも山があり、山の奥にも山がある。人の生の旅はただ登りです」

多くの人は、年齢を重ねることを制限の増加として捉えがちだ。体力の衰え、選択肢の減少、責任の重さ。まるで檻の中に入れられていくような感覚。でも蘆花は、それを「ヤコブの夢の天にかける梯」に例えている。上に向かって続く階段。制限ではなく、可能性への道筋。

そして、こう続ける。「山の上にも山があり、山の奥にも山がある」

一つの目標を達成し、峠にたどり着いたと思った瞬間、そこから初めて見える新しい景色、そして次に登るべき、さらに高い山。それは絶望ではない。むしろ、人生がまだ新しい挑戦と、まだ見ぬ景色に出会う可能性に満ちているという、祝福のようにも聞こえる。

この言葉は、何かを成し遂げたら「上がり」だと考える、私たちの固定観念を揺さぶる。一つの仕事をやり遂げても、そこには新しい責任という次の山が待っている。何かを習得したと思っても、その奥にはさらに深い世界が広がっている。

「人の生の旅はただ登りです」

この最後の言葉が、深く胸に響く。人生の目的は、どこか一つの頂上にたどり着くことではないのかもしれない。息が切れ、足が重くなっても、一歩また一歩と登り続ける、そのプロセス自体にこそ、生きるということの本質があるのだろう。

頂上からの景色だけがご褒美なのではない。登る中で出会う人々、変わりゆく風景、そして、困難に立ち向かう自分自身の心の動き。そのすべてが、人生という旅の豊かさなのだと、蘆花の言葉は教えてくれる。

次に登るべき山が常にあるということは、人生がまだ新しい可能性に満ちているということだ。

そう考えると、日々の問題も、少しだけ愛おしく思えてくるから不思議だ。

Mountains Beyond Mountains: On Life’s Never-Ending Climb

As you climb a mountain path, sweating, there are moments when you suddenly see the summit through a break in the trees. “Just a little further, and it’ll be over,” you think, pushing yourself with your last bit of strength. But the view from the place you finally reach is not a peaceful, descending path, but the sight of the next mountain, towering even further or higher beyond.

The Meiji-era writer, Tokutomi Roka, expressed this very feeling with remarkable skill, as a metaphor for life itself.

“If life is a hundred, fifty is but halfway. I have come to a mountain pass. But a pass doesn’t necessarily mean a cage lies beyond. Like Jacob’s ladder to heaven, there are mountains above mountains, and mountains behind mountains. The journey of a person’s life is only to climb.”

It’s a phrase that describes the view from a “mountain pass,” a metaphor for the midpoint of life. Many people tend to see getting older as an increase in limitations. Physical decline, fewer options, heavy responsibilities. It can feel like being put into a cage. But Roka compares it to “Jacob’s ladder to heaven”—a staircase that continues upward. Not a limitation, but a path to possibility.

And then he continues: “There are mountains above mountains, and mountains behind mountains.”

The moment you think you’ve reached a goal, arrived at a pass, you see for the first time a new landscape, and the next, even higher mountain to climb. This is not despair. Rather, it sounds like a blessing—a sign that life is still full of new challenges and new sights yet to be seen.

This idea shakes our fixed notion that once we accomplish something, we are “done.” Even when you finish one job, the next mountain of new responsibilities is waiting. Even when you think you have mastered something, an even deeper world extends beyond it.

“The journey of a person’s life is only to climb.”

This final line resonates deeply. Perhaps the purpose of life is not to arrive at a single summit. The essence of what it means to live may lie in the process itself—of continuing to climb, step by step, even when you are out of breath and your legs feel heavy.

The view from the top is not the only reward. The people you meet during the climb, the changing scenery, and the movements of your own heart as you face difficulties—Roka’s words teach us that all of these things make up the richness of life’s journey.

The fact that there is always another mountain to climb means that life is still full of new possibilities.

When you think of it that way, it’s strange how even daily problems can start to feel a little precious.
