Reading is the Gym, the Internet is a Stroll
When I first heard the phrase “Reading is the gym, the Internet is a stroll,” it instantly made sense to me.
When you go to the gym, you put your muscles under load to train them.
It may not be useful right away, but if you keep at it, your strength builds, your posture improves, and daily activities become easier.
Reading is the same. Even if the content is difficult or the knowledge isn’t immediately applicable, reading gradually trains your “thinking muscles,” building endurance and flexibility in the way you think.
The Internet, on the other hand, is something more casual and free.
You skim through interesting articles, watch videos, or wander through social media. This is like taking your mind for a light “stroll.”
You open YouTube and casually watch entertaining clips or random videos. It’s perfect for a quick change of pace—like getting fresh air—where you encounter new topics or unexpected discoveries. But it’s not the kind of place where you build muscles or put yourself under deliberate strain.
Still, I think both are necessary.
If all you ever do is go to the gym, you’ll wear yourself out. You need the occasional light exercise, like a walk. In the same way, if you only ever read heavy books, your mind will get tired. Sometimes it’s refreshing to simply browse the Internet and take in lighter information.
For both the body and the mind, doing nothing but training—or nothing but relaxing—will eventually lead to decline.
That’s why I try to value both: the time I spend turning the pages of a book, and the time I spend wandering casually through the Internet.
