マカオから珠海「自動化」でものすごく手軽に。

今日はマカオから、目と鼻の先にある珠海（じゅはい）へ。マカオと珠海を結ぶイミグレーション。これまでに何度もこのルートを通ってきたけれど、今回、イミグレーションのスムーズさに正直驚かされた。

マカオと珠海の国境では、自動化ゲートが本格的に稼働していて、中国籍とマカオ籍の人たちは、ほぼノンストップで次々と通過していく。そのおかげで、有人ゲートの数こそ少ないものの、日本人でも待ち時間がほとんどなく、あっけないほどスムーズに入国できた。

去年は、「ビザが必要だし、時間もかかりそうだな」と思って珠海に行くのを見送った。ただ、この自動化ゲートがもたらした劇的な変化を目の当たりにすると、これなら、もっと気軽に行き来してもいいなと思えた。

そして何より驚いたのが、マカオと珠海の間を行き来する人の数。とにかく多い。時間帯にもよるのだろうけれど、終始人の流れが途切れない。まるで、都市と都市というより、密接につながった“日常の圏内”という感じすらある。

珠海に足を踏み入れると、その空気がまたがらっと変わる。温州ともマカオとも違う、珠海ならではの雰囲気が確かにある。こうして一歩ずつ土地をまたぎながら思うのは、同じ中国の中でも都市ごとにまったく異なる顔があるということ。それがまた面白い。単一の「中国」ではなく、「それぞれの街ごとに重なり合う中国」とでも言ったほうが、きっと正確だ。

旅をしていると、こうした「移動」そのものから多くのことを学ぶ。国境の在り方、街の個性、人々の生活パターン。気軽に、そして深く。国境を越えるという行為が、ただの「移動」ではなく、「感覚を切り替える体験」になりつつある。

From Macau to Zhuhai: How Automation Made Border Crossing Effortless

Today, I crossed from Macau to Zhuhai, a city just a stone’s throw away. I’ve taken this route many times before, but this time I was honestly surprised by how smooth the immigration process has become.

The border between Macau and Zhuhai now features fully operational automated gates. Chinese and Macau passport holders breeze through with hardly any delay. As a result, even though there are fewer manned counters, the flow remains quick—and even as a Japanese passport holder, I got through in no time at all. It felt almost effortless.

Last year, I skipped visiting Zhuhai entirely because of the visa requirement and the expected hassle. But seeing how dramatically things have changed thanks to automation, I realized this route is now much more approachable. It genuinely feels like something I could do spontaneously.

What struck me even more was the sheer number of people crossing between Macau and Zhuhai. The foot traffic never seemed to stop. It didn’t feel like traveling between two distinct cities—it felt like moving within the same urban ecosystem. Almost as if these two places are part of a single, shared daily rhythm.

Once inside Zhuhai, I immediately sensed a shift in atmosphere. It’s not quite like Wenzhou, and it’s definitely not like Macau either. Zhuhai has its own distinct vibe, its own pace. That’s the beauty of traveling within China—each city reveals a different face, layered with its own culture, behavior, and energy. It’s not just “China” as a whole, but a mosaic of overlapping, unique cities.

Travel teaches you things through the act of moving itself. Border dynamics, urban character, daily habits—they all become part of the experience. More and more, crossing a border feels less like a logistical step, and more like switching into an entirely new sensory mode.

Light, but deep. That’s the kind of travel I want to keep doing.
