「混まない」国際空港

今日は温州を発って、国際便で香港を経由してマカオへ。目的は社員研修。といっても、現地集合して夜に一緒に食事をするだけで、あとは完全自由。ゆるやかな旅のような、仕事のような、そんな時間。

まず驚いたのが、温州の国際空港の静けさだった。とにかく人がいない。国際線の便数が少ないからか、空港全体が落ち着いていて、どこか拍子抜けするほどスムーズ。これがまた、実に快適だった。セキュリティチェックも出国審査も、まったく混まない。旅というのは、こういう小さな快適さの積み重ねが、全体の印象をぐっと引き上げてくれる。

乗り継ぎ地の香港。まずは、よく香港を訪れる人が利用できる自動化ゲートの登録にしにいったのだけれど、条件が「年4回訪問」で、どうやら自分はまだそこに届いていなかったらしい。1ヶ月前にも香港には来ていたけれど、トランジットだったためカウントされなかったようだ。なんとなく残念ではあるけれど、これもまた旅につきものの「ちょっとしたズレ」の一つ。

そこからマカオまではバス移動。最近は橋が開通したおかげで、香港からマカオまでのアクセスが格段に便利になった。以前に比べれば移動のストレスはだいぶ減ったものの、問題はイミグレーション。こればかりはタイミング次第で、待ち時間が大きく変わる。

人が少ないと思って油断していたら、入国審査の窓口に係官が一人だけということもある。たった15人しか並んでいないのに、前の誰かが手続きでつまずいていたら、それだけで30分以上かかることもある。逆に、スムーズに進めば5分で終わることもあるから、不確実性の塊だ。どこの国でもそうだけれど、結局この「入出国」のプロセスが、旅の中でじつは一番ストレスかもしれない。

そういう意味でも、温州のような“空いている国際線”はありがたい存在。華やかさや利便性をうたう大都市の空港もいいけれど、こぢんまりとしていて人が少なく、流れがスムーズな空港の方が、個人的にはずっと好きだ。特に仕事を兼ねた移動のときは、余計なストレスがないというだけで、気持ちにかなりの余裕が生まれる。

あらためて感じたのは、「混まない」ということの価値。その静けさと効率性は本当にありがたく思えてくる。旅をラクに、心地よく続けるために、これから旅行の計画を立てるときは、「混まない国際空港」というのも旅の選択基準に入れてみようかな。

The Value of an Uncrowded International Airport

Today, I left Wenzhou, catching an international flight to Macau via Hong Kong. The purpose of the trip was a company retreat—but really, it was more like a lightly structured getaway. We simply meet up in the evening for dinner, and the rest is completely free time. It feels like part business, part leisurely journey.

The first surprise was how quiet Wenzhou International Airport was. There were barely any people around. Because there are so few international flights, the whole airport felt calm—almost disarmingly so. And that made it incredibly comfortable. Security checks and immigration were a breeze. Travel, after all, is often shaped by these small comforts. When they stack up, they make the whole experience much more pleasant.

At the layover in Hong Kong, I headed to register for the automated immigration gates, available to frequent visitors. However, I found out that to qualify, you need to enter Hong Kong at least four times a year. Apparently, I haven’t made the cut just yet. I was here just a month ago, but it was only a transit stop—so it didn’t count. A bit disappointing, but these small mismatches are just part of the travel experience.

From Hong Kong, I took a bus to Macau. Thanks to the newly completed bridge, traveling between the two cities has become much more convenient. Compared to before, the stress of getting there has really gone down. Still, immigration remains unpredictable.

Sometimes, you assume there’ll be no wait because there aren’t many people—but then you realize there’s only one officer at the booth. Even with just 15 people ahead of you, if someone takes too long, it can easily stretch into a 30-minute delay. On a good day, that same line could move in under five minutes. Immigration is one of those unavoidable variables in travel, no matter which country you’re in. In fact, it might be the most tiring part of the whole trip.

That’s why airports like Wenzhou’s, with light traffic and minimal hassle, are such a blessing. Major airports with sleek design and world-class amenities are great, but for me, smaller and quieter airports with smoother flow are far better—especially on business-related trips. The less stress there is, the more room there is for mental clarity.

Today reminded me again of the value of “not being crowded.” Some people might feel more secure in a bustling space, but the more travel becomes routine, the more I come to appreciate quiet and efficiency.

Even on days mostly filled with transit, there are always little discoveries and insights. It doesn’t take dramatic events to make a journey meaningful—sometimes it’s simply about where and how you move through the world.

To make travel easier and more comfortable, I’ll keep seeking out these “quiet international airports.” Finding a style of movement that suits me is part of building a stress-free way of traveling.
