これはすごい！「au Starlink Direct」スターリンクの未来

先日、思い切ってスターリンクを購入してみた。話題の衛星インターネット。これでどこでも高速通信ができるようになるのか！と、ワクワクしながら設置してみたのだけれど、現実はそう甘くなかった。確かに以前のモデルよりずいぶんと小さくなったらしいけれど、我が家の周りにはどうやら電波を遮る障害物が多いようで、残念ながらまだ一度も繋がっていない。せっかく買ったのに、箱に入ったままの状態だ。

そんなちょっと残念な思いを抱えていたところに、飛び込んできたのがこのニュース！これは本当にすばらしい！

なんと、KDDIが「スターリンク」とスマートフォンが直接通信できるサービス「au Starlink Direct」を本格的に開始するというのだ。これまで、携帯電話が繋がらなかった場所でも、空が見える場所であれば、どこでも携帯が使えるようになるらしい。

これまでも、スターリンク自体は災害時などの臨時的な措置として使われてきたけれど、今回発表されたのは、「基地局もスターリンク端末もないエリアでの通信」だという。陸上の基地局なしで、衛星を使って一般の利用者が直接通信を行えるのは、日本で初めてのことらしい。これは、本当に画期的なことではないだろうか。

KDDIの新社長である松田浩路さんは、「日本の国土面積に対する通信網のカバー率は60％。残り40％を何とかしたいと思ってやってきた。スタートできて万感の思いだ」と語っている。この言葉を聞いて、KDDIの強い思いを感じた。繋がらない場所がある、という当たり前を覆そうとしているのだ。

自分が買ったスターリンクは、まだ電波を掴めていないけれど、この「au Starlink Direct」が実現すれば、私のスマートフォンが、どこにいても繋がるようになるかもしれない。そう考えると、なんだかワクワクしてくる。

技術の進歩は本当にすごい。少し前まで考えられなかったことが、次々と現実になっている。私がまだ使えていないスターリンクも、この新しいサービスによって、その可能性を大きく広げるかもしれない。

繋がるって、本当に大切なことだ。情報へのアクセスはもちろん、人との繋がりも生み出す。KDDIのこの挑戦が、日本の隅々まで、そして世界の隅々まで、繋がりの輪を広げていくことを期待したい。そして、いつか自分のスターリンクも、その恩恵を受けられる日が来ることを、心待ちにしている。

I Recently Bought Starlink, But This is Amazing!

The other day, I took the plunge and bought Starlink. The much-talked-about satellite internet. I was so excited, thinking I could finally have high-speed internet anywhere! I eagerly set it up, but reality wasn’t so kind. Apparently, the latest model is much smaller than before, but it seems my neighborhood has too many obstacles blocking the signal. Unfortunately, I haven’t been able to connect even once. I bought it with such anticipation, and it’s still sitting in its box.

Just as I was feeling a bit disappointed, this news popped up! This is truly amazing!

Apparently, KDDI is fully launching “au Starlink Direct,” a service that allows smartphones to communicate directly with Starlink satellites. This means that even in places where cell phones haven’t worked before, you’ll be able to use your phone anywhere you can see the sky.

Starlink itself has been used as a temporary measure in times of disaster, but what’s being announced this time is “communication in areas where there are no base stations or Starlink terminals.” It seems that this is the first time in Japan that general users can directly communicate using satellites without a terrestrial base station. Isn’t that truly groundbreaking?

KDDI’s new president, Hiroji Matsuda, said, “The coverage rate of our communication network for Japan’s land area is 60%. We’ve been working hard to do something about the remaining 40%. I’m filled with emotion that we’ve finally been able to start.” Hearing these words, I felt KDDI’s strong determination. They’re trying to overturn the common assumption that there are places where you can’t connect.

The Starlink I bought hasn’t been able to catch a signal yet, but if this “au Starlink Direct” becomes a reality, my smartphone might be able to connect no matter where I am. Just thinking about that makes me feel excited.

Technological progress is truly incredible. Things that were unimaginable just a little while ago are becoming reality one after another. The Starlink that I haven’t been able to use yet might also have its potential greatly expanded by this new service.

Being connected is truly important. It provides access to information, of course, but it also creates connections between people. I hope that KDDI’s challenge will spread the circle of connection to every corner of Japan and every corner of the world. And I’m eagerly waiting for the day when my own Starlink can also benefit from this.
