「遊びやせんとや生まれけん」〜あの人、センスいいよね〜

「あの人、センスいいよね」

そう思う人を思い浮かべてみてください。服装、持ち物、言葉の選び方、ちょっとした仕草… 何気ないところに、その人らしい「センス」が光っている。

そして、そういう人たちを観察していると、ある共通点に気づきます。それは、彼らが例外なく「遊んでいる」ということ。

センスがいい人は、遊び上手

ここで言う「遊ぶ」とは、単なる娯楽や気晴らしのことではありません。世界中を旅していたり、様々な経験を積極的に求めていたり、多様な文化や考え方に触れていること。好奇心を持って世界を広く見ている姿勢のことです。

もちろん、クラブで夜通し騒ぐことだって、一つの「遊び」です！（それも否定しません！）

でも、ここで言う「遊び」は、もっと広い意味での「遊び」なんです。例えば…

世界中を旅する
美術館や博物館でアートに触れる
映画や演劇で心を揺さぶられる
音楽に身を委ねる
美味しいものを味わう
新しい趣味に挑戦する
自然の中で深呼吸する
気の合う仲間と語り合う

つまり、「心を解放し、好奇心の赴くままに行動すること」すべてが「遊び」なんです。

遊びとは「探索」である

本来、「遊び」とは自由な探索行動です。子どもが遊びを通して世界を理解し、感性を磨くように、大人の「遊び」も自らの世界を拡張する行為です。

なぜ「遊び」がセンスを磨くのか？

「遊び」は、私たちの感性を刺激し、世界を広げてくれます。それは、まるで新しい眼鏡をかけた時のように。

多様な価値観に触れる: 旅先で異文化に触れたり、様々なジャンルの芸術作品に触れたり。凝り固まった価値観が解き放たれ、新しい視点に気づかせてくれます。
五感が刺激される: 美しい景色、美味しい料理、心地よい音楽…。五感を通して得られる感動は、感性を豊かにし、表現力を高めます。
「自分らしさ」が見つかる: 色々な経験をする中で、「自分は何が好きで、何に感動するのか」がクリアになり、自分らしいスタイルが確立されていきます。
「余白」がアイデアを生む: 日常から離れ、心に「余白」を作ることで、自由な発想が生まれやすくなります。
コミュニケーション力がUP: 旅先での出会いや、趣味を通じた交流は、コミュニケーション能力を高め、人としての魅力を引き出します。

センスとは「引き出し」の豊かさ

よく考えてみれば当然のことかもしれません。センスとは、単なる生まれつきの感覚ではなく、様々な体験から培われる「判断の基準」の豊かさです。

多くの場所を訪れた人は、多様な美しさの形を知っています。
多様な文化に触れた人は、異なる価値観の中にある普遍性を感じ取れます。
多様な人と交流した人は、人間理解の幅が広がっています。

こうした「引き出し」の豊かさが、洋服の組み合わせ、インテリアの選び方、言葉の選択、そして人間関係の築き方など、あらゆる場面での判断に現れるのです。

台北での焼肉、Garyさんとの出会い

先日、私は台北を訪れ、クラシコのデザイナーのGaryさんと焼肉をご一緒する機会がありました。Garyさんは、アイウェアのデザインも手掛けている、とてもセンスの良い方。

驚いたのは、彼の肉の焼き方。一枚一枚、まるで宝石を扱うように丁寧に網に乗せ、火加減を絶妙に調整する。その手つきは、まるで熟練の職人のようでした。

ちょっとしたしぐさですが、そのしぐさは、彼のデザインにも共通していると感じました。細部まで妥協せず、最高のものを創り出そうとする姿勢。それは、「遊び心」と「探究心」を持ち合わせているからこそ生まれるものなのでしょう。

遊ぶことを恐れない

残念ながら、大人になると「遊び」を忘れがちです。効率や生産性を重視するあまり、「無駄な経験」を避けてしまいます。しかし、一見無駄に見える寄り道や、目的のない探索こそが、私たちの感性を豊かにするのではないでしょうか。

センスを磨きたいなら、まずは「遊ぶこと」を恐れないことです。

行ったことのない場所に足を運ぶ
知らない分野の本を手に取る
バックグラウンドの異なる人と会話する
普段聴かない音楽を聴いてみる

そうした小さな「遊び」が、少しずつあなたの感性を広げ、センスを磨いていくのだと思います。

センスは磨けるもの

センスがいい人は生まれつきそうなのではなく、豊かな経験の中で磨かれてきたのです。だからこそ、誰でも努力次第でセンスを磨くことができます。

大切なのは、自分の殻に閉じこもらず、好奇心を持って世界と関わり続けること。そして何より、その過程を楽しむこと。

「遊ぶ」ことを通じて、あなたのセンスもきっと磨かれていくでしょう。

People with Good Taste Know How to Play, People Who Play Have Good Taste

“That person has such good taste.”

Take a moment to imagine someone you think of this way. Their clothing, possessions, choice of words, subtle gestures… Their unique “sensibility” shines through in the most casual details.

When you observe these people, you’ll notice they have something in common. Without exception, they all know how to “play.”

People with Good Taste Are Masters of Play

By “play,” I don’t mean mere entertainment or recreation. I’m talking about traveling the world, actively seeking various experiences, and exposing yourself to diverse cultures and ways of thinking. It’s an attitude of viewing the world with curiosity.

Of course, dancing all night at a club is also a form of “play”! (I’m not dismissing that!)

But the “play” I’m referring to has a broader meaning. For example:

Traveling around the world
Experiencing art in museums and galleries
Being moved by films and theater
Surrendering yourself to music
Savoring delicious food
Challenging yourself with new hobbies
Taking deep breaths in nature
Engaging in conversations with like-minded friends

In other words, “play” encompasses everything that involves “freeing your mind and following your curiosity.”

Play Is About “Exploration”

Fundamentally, “play” is about free exploration. Just as children understand the world and refine their sensibilities through play, adults’ “play” also expands their world.

Why Does “Play” Enhance Our Sense of Taste?

“Play” stimulates our sensibilities and broadens our world. It’s like putting on a new pair of glasses.

Exposure to diverse values: Encountering different cultures during travels or experiencing various genres of art. Rigid values dissolve, making way for new perspectives.
Stimulation of the five senses: Beautiful scenery, delicious cuisine, pleasant music… The emotions experienced through our five senses enrich our sensibilities and enhance our expressiveness.
Discovering “your authentic self”: Through various experiences, you clarify “what you like and what moves you,” helping establish your unique style.
“Empty space” generates ideas: Stepping away from daily life and creating “empty space” in your mind facilitates free thinking.
Enhanced communication skills: Encounters during travels and interactions through hobbies improve communication abilities and draw out your personal charm.

Good Taste Comes from a Rich “Repertoire”

When you think about it, it’s quite obvious. Good taste isn’t merely an innate sense but the richness of “judgment criteria” cultivated through various experiences.

People who have visited many places know diverse forms of beauty.
Those exposed to various cultures can sense the universality within different value systems.
Those who have interacted with diverse people have a broader understanding of human nature.

This richness of “repertoire” manifests in all aspects of decision-making, from clothing combinations to interior choices, word selection, and how relationships are built.

Meeting Gary Over Yakiniku in Taipei

Recently, I visited Taipei and had the opportunity to enjoy yakiniku with Gary, a designer for Classico who also designs eyewear. He’s someone with exceptional taste.

What surprised me was how he grilled the meat. He placed each slice on the grill with the care of handling precious gems, adjusting the heat perfectly. His technique was like that of a master craftsman.

Though it was just a simple gesture, I felt it reflected his design approach. An attitude of not compromising on details and striving to create something exceptional. This comes from having both a “playful spirit” and an “inquiring mind.”

Don’t Be Afraid to Play

Unfortunately, as adults, we often forget how to “play.” Focusing too much on efficiency and productivity, we avoid “unnecessary experiences.” However, isn’t it these seemingly unnecessary detours and purposeless explorations that enrich our sensibilities?

If you want to refine your taste, start by not being afraid to “play.”

Visit places you’ve never been
Pick up books from unfamiliar fields
Converse with people from different backgrounds
Listen to music you don’t usually hear

These small acts of “play” will gradually expand your sensibilities and refine your taste.

Taste Can Be Cultivated

People with good taste aren’t born that way; they’ve been refined through rich experiences. That’s why anyone can cultivate good taste with effort.

What’s important is not to shut yourself within your shell but to continue engaging with the world with curiosity. And above all, to enjoy the process.

Through “play,” your sense of taste will surely be refined.
