「ネットがないとこんなに大変？」台北、7km、暑い

本日18時、何年ぶりかに台湾・台北に到着。最近はahamoのおかげでどこ行っても大抵ネットが使えるから、SIMカードは基本買わなのだけれど、台湾じゃまったく通じなかった。空港で慌ててAmazonでeSIMを買ったものの、タイミングが合わず即開通できず。しょうがないと、ネットなしでホテルを目指すことに。

困ったのがホテルの場所。GoogleマップのGPSはなんとか拾ってたけど、ネットがないから詳細がわからず、「3、4kmくらいかな？ならすぐだな」と体感で歩き始めたところ、これが大誤算。ネットがないせいで距離感が全然つかめなくて、結局7km、8kmと倍ぐらい歩いた。8kmも距離自体はたいしたことないんだけれど、何より暑い！それに、ホテルのチェックインが20時までで、それ以降だと下の共通玄関が閉まるって事前に言われてたから、時間が。

結局19時50分、ギリギリでなんとか到着。久しぶりに道行く現地の人にホテルの場所を聞いて助けてもらったんですけど、その人が教えてくれたのも、結局ネットの通じるGoogleマップだったっていう（笑）。でも、現地の方は本当に温かくて親切で、ほっこり。

で、改めて気づいた。今自分がどれだけネットに頼り切ってるのかと。普段はスマホでサクッと調べてサクッと移動、最近当たり前すぎちゃって、意識してなかったけど、ネットがないだけでこんなに非効率になるとは。

なお、今回は一人だし、もしチェックインに間に合わなくても、今取ってるホテルは格安だから、1泊分捨てて近くのホテルを取れば済む話ではある。けれども、やっぱりなんだかそれはもったいない。

ちなみにネットは、ホテルに着いたら、ちょうど使えるようになった。ある意味ジャストタイミング（笑）。とにかく台湾、久しぶりだけど、いいな。あったかいし、南国だし、ちょっと懐かしい感じだし、やっぱり好きかも！

“No Internet, This Tough?” Taipei, Hot, and an Unexpected 7km

Landed in Taipei, Taiwan at 6 PM today—first time in years. Lately, thanks to ahamo, I’ve been getting by with internet pretty much anywhere, so I don’t usually bother with SIM cards. But in Taiwan? Totally dead. No connection. At the airport, I quickly grabbed an eSIM off Amazon on the spot, but the timing didn’t line up, and it wouldn’t activate right away. Oh well, I figured I’d head to the hotel without internet.

The problem? Finding the hotel. Google Maps sorta picked up GPS, but with no internet, I couldn’t get details. Thought, “Maybe 3 or 4km?” and started walking. Big mistake. Without a signal, my sense of distance was way off—I ended up walking about 7km. The distance itself wasn’t a big deal, but man, it was hot! Plus, I’d been told check-in was by 8 PM or the main entrance would lock, so it was a race against time.

Made it at 7:50 PM, just barely. Asked a local on the street for help—first time in ages doing that—and they were super nice, but guess what? They pulled up Google Maps with their working internet to show me . Still, people here are so warm and kind, it really warmed my heart.

And then it hit me: I rely on the internet way too much. Normally, I just whip out my phone, look stuff up quick, move on—lately it’s so second nature I don’t even think about it. But without it? Total chaos and inefficiency.

Now, I’m solo this time, so if I hadn’t made check-in, it’s not the end of the world. The hotel’s cheap anyway—could’ve ditched a night and grabbed a nearby one. But still, that feels kinda wasteful, you know?

Oh, and the internet? It kicked in right when I got to the hotel. Perfect timing, I guess. Anyway, Taiwan after all this time—it’s warm, tropical, got that nostalgic vibe. I think I really like it here!
