娘の学校での発表を控えて

来週、中学生の娘の中学校で、１時間ほどお話をさせていただく。どんな話をしようと日々考えているのだけれど、先日、ある記事でみたチャットGPTのアルトマン氏の言葉に大いに共感した。「プログラミング教育の本質は、いかに創造的な問題解決をするかにある。だから、これからは創造力をAIとともに高めていく教育へとシフトしていくだろう」と。コードを書くための細かな文法やツールの使い方は、AIがある程度はカバーしてくれる。でも、“何を実現したいのか？”“どうやって問題を解決したいのか？”というアイデアを出すのは人間の役割。しかも、そこにこそ面白さがある。

アルトマン自身、10年前には絶対不可欠だったプログラミング・ツールの知識は、もはや必須ではないと述べている。昔はパンチカードでプログラムを打ち込む時代もあったように、技術や知識の必須要件ってあっという間に変化していく。最近なら「このフレームワークを知らないと…」みたいに言われることもあるけど、10年後はまた違う手段が主流になっているかもしれない。

これはプログラミングだけじゃなく、あらゆるジャンルでも言えることだと思う。何かを学ぶとき、「道具の使い方」に意識が向きがちだけれど、道具そのものはアップデートされ続けるから、正直すぐに陳腐化してしまう。大事なのは、「自分が本当に成し遂げたいこと」を明確にして、それをどうやって形にするかを考え抜く力だ。そして、そこにAIが加わることで、今までは思いつかなかった解決策や、新しいアイデアを生み出すヒントが得られるようになるはず。

だからこそ、プログラミング教育を考えるときに、ただコードの文法やツールの操作方法を詰め込むのではなく、“創造的に問題を解決する力”をどう伸ばせるかがポイントになってくる。プログラミング言語はあくまで「やりたいことを実現するための手段」の一つ。将来、道具がどんなに便利になっても、「何を実現したいのか？」が人間側で明確に描けなければ、AIに全部丸投げしてしまって“やりたいこと”そのものがぼやけてしまうかもしれない。

結局、一番面白いのはAIと人間がタッグを組む世界なんじゃないかと思う。AIがツールとしてサポートしてくれて、人間は創造的なアイデアを出したり、直感や経験を活かして問題解決の方法を導き出したりする。それこそが次世代のプログラミング教育の姿であり、AI時代に求められる力なんだろう。

今はまだ、プログラミング言語やフレームワークを学ぶことももちろん必要なのかもしれないけれど、そればかりがゴールではないはず。そうではなく、AIを効果的に統合しながら、自らの創造性を存分に発揮すること。それこそが、今後世界が求める教育なのかもしれない。

Preparing for My Daughter’s School Presentation

Next week, I’ll have the opportunity to speak for about an hour at my daughter’s junior high school. I’ve been thinking every day about what I might talk about, and recently I came across a statement by Sam Altman of ChatGPT that resonated with me: “The essence of programming education is figuring out how to engage in creative problem-solving. That’s why, going forward, we’re likely to see education shift toward boosting creativity in collaboration with AI.”

The finer points of coding syntax and tools can largely be handled by AI these days. But the real excitement lies in questions like “What do I want to accomplish?” and “How can I solve this problem?”—which remain very much human endeavors.

Altman himself points out that programming tool knowledge, once absolutely essential a decade ago, is no longer indispensable. Just as we used to rely on punch cards for programming, the baseline skills and know-how keep changing rapidly. Today, you might hear, “You have to learn this framework,” but in another ten years, the mainstream approach could be entirely different.

This isn’t unique to programming. In any field, focusing on how to use specific tools is common, but those tools evolve so fast that they can become obsolete in no time. What really matters is getting crystal-clear on “What do I truly want to achieve?” and then figuring out how to bring that vision to life. AI can add an entirely new dimension to this process, sparking fresh ideas and solutions we might never have come up with on our own.

That’s why, when we think about programming education, it shouldn’t be just about cramming syntax or tool operations. We need to emphasize “creative problem-solving skills.” After all, programming languages are just tools to make our ideas a reality. Even if the tools become extraordinarily convenient, if we aren’t sure what we want to accomplish, we may end up letting AI take over everything and lose sight of our original goals.

Ultimately, I find it most exciting to imagine a world where AI and humans work in tandem—AI providing support as a tool, and people using creativity, intuition, and experience to devise solutions. That’s what the next generation of programming education could look like, and it’s what I believe will be crucial in the era of AI.

For now, learning programming languages or frameworks might still be necessary, but that shouldn’t be the ultimate goal. Instead, it’s about integrating AI effectively while fully unleashing our own creativity. This kind of approach may very well be what the world is looking for in the future.
