Milan Day One: A Quiet Morning

I arrived in Milan at around five o’clock this morning. February in Europe already means shorter daylight hours, and to top it off, the weather was rainy, leaving the entire city feeling hushed and still. With it being the off-season and the added drizzle, Milan is remarkably quiet right now. At this time of year, sunrise is around 7:30, so even if you start your day early, the sky remains dim. Combine that with jet lag, and it gives the morning a dreamlike quality.

Off to a Trade Show First Thing

After arriving at 5 a.m., I went straight to a trade show from about 8 a.m. to 2 p.m. Given how weak the yen is at the moment, I planned to just browse. But in the end, I still ended up purchasing more than I intended.

Wandering Through Rainy Milan

I wrapped up at the show a bit earlier than planned and headed into Milan’s city center. The streets were slick from the rain, and despite it being daytime, the sky stayed a dull gray. The roads were wide and open, with few people out and about. Even peeking into cafés, I saw hardly any tourists.

A Trip for Two with My Junior High Daughter

This time, I’m traveling with my daughter, who’s in her second year of junior high. For her, this is the farthest she’s ever been from Japan. From the difference in cityscapes and food culture to the cold, rainy weather typical of this season, she still doesn’t quite feel the full impact of being “truly abroad” yet.

Although Milan is usually associated with fashion and bustling tourism, on a rainy winter day, it’s surprisingly deserted—so much so that it’s hard to believe it’s a famous destination. My daughter mention how late it gets light compared to Japan and how few people are around.

Embracing the Quiet of Italy and a European Winter

This subdued side of Italy captures the unique, gentle charm of a European winter. I hope the distinctive stillness of this place becomes a meaningful memory for my daughter. Tomorrow, we’re off to Venice.
