5億ドルが1カ月で吹っ飛ぶ！？
先日、OpenAIが年間45億ドルの売上を見込みつつも、AIモデルのトレーニングや人件費で70億ドルを消費し、結果として年間50億ドルの赤字になるというニュースを目にした。さらに、OpenAIの現在の評価額は1500億ドルにも上り、スライブ・キャピタル主導で65億ドルの資金調達を目指しているという。特に注目に値するのは、この資金調達イニシアティブの一環として、ソフトバンクグループが初めてOpenAIに5億ドルを投資する計画であることだ。
この業界がすごいのは、5億ドルが「1カ月で吹っ飛ぶ」というスケールの大きさだ。これは、通常のビジネス感覚では到底理解できないが、次世代のスタンダードを作るには、これほどのリスクを取る必要があるという現実を物語っている。
今や、自分は、ChatGPTを使わない時間はないぐらい使っているけれど、OpenAIに限らず、AI市場は今、熾烈な競争が繰り広げられている。オープンソースの言語モデルが100万種類以上も存在し、業界全体がレッドオーシャン化している中で、ソフトバンクは他のAI企業にも積極的に投資を行っている。特に、これまでOpenAIに投資してこなかったソフトバンクが、今回5億ドルを注ぎ込む決断をしたことは、AIが次の大きな波となることを見越しての大胆な戦略に違いない。
こうしたリスクの取り方を見ていると、やはり「次の大きなもの」を手に入れるためには、大胆な投資が不可欠なのだ。過去を振り返れば、今、日常的に使っている技術やサービスも、最初は「無謀だ」と言われたプロジェクトが多い。しかし、それらが成功し、今では標準となっている。つまり、リスクを取らなければ未来は形作れないのだ。

5 Billion Dollars Blown in a Month!
Recently, I came across news that OpenAI is projected to generate $4.5 billion in annual revenue, yet it will burn through $7 billion for AI model training and personnel costs, resulting in a $5 billion annual deficit. Additionally, OpenAI’s current valuation has soared to $150 billion, with a funding round led by Thrive Capital aiming to raise $6.5 billion. What’s particularly noteworthy is that SoftBank Group, for the first time, is planning to invest $500 million in OpenAI as part of this funding initiative.
What’s truly astonishing about this industry is the scale at which $500 million can “blow away in just a month.” This is beyond the scope of ordinary business thinking, but it underscores the reality that creating the next-generation standard requires taking such massive risks.
These days, I use ChatGPT so much that I can’t go a day without it. But OpenAI isn’t the only player in this space; the AI market is fiercely competitive. With over a million open-source language models in existence, the industry has become a red ocean. SoftBank, which has been investing heavily in other AI companies, is now making a bold move by committing $500 million to OpenAI, likely because it sees AI as the next big wave.
Looking at how these risks are being taken, it’s clear that to acquire “the next big thing,” bold investments are absolutely necessary. If we look back at history, many of the technologies and services we now use every day were initially labeled “reckless” projects. But those that succeeded have become today’s standards. In short, without taking risks, you cannot shape the future.
The risks SoftBank and OpenAI are taking are not just gambles; they are investments in building the infrastructure for the next generation of AI. And it will be companies that can view these massive risks as opportunities that will lead the next era.
