The human instinct is to get bored and move on to the next thing.
I have the opportunity to speak for an hour at my eldest daughter’s junior high school next week, and after a week of travelling with my nephew, who is about to enter a technical college, it is clear that people who can see the bigger picture are more likely to live happier lives. Travelling is a great way to experience different values and to get a chance to see things from the big picture.
Being in a limited community is comfortable, but it limits the way you see things and prevents you from seeing the bigger picture. Before you know it, you become comfortable, self-interested and exclusive. The human instinct is to move on because we get bored. Being bored is not generally a bad thing, and you can move on to the next thing as much as you like. If you are worried, move on first. Well, often when you’re worried you don’t take the first step, but I felt again that this is the secret.
