グルグル回って運転は、ほぼ海外のみ。

昔は、暗黙のルールのようなもので、いかに安く世界を回るかを競うようなバックパッカーだったので、レンタカーなんてとんでもなかったけれど、今やもう45歳。別にそんな極端な貧乏旅行の必要もないので、最近は海外に行くと、どこの国でもほぼレンタカー。

ただ自分は東京に住んでいるので、車をもっていないし、日本では、年末年始や子供の休みの時などのシェアカーやレンタカー以外、運転は基本一切しない。

日本の交通ルールに染まってないのが逆にいいのか、右運転でも、信号がないロータリーでも、よくわからんルールでも比較的柔軟に対応できる。まあ、普通の都市部の車の運転なので、間違ったからって死なないし、別に先の交差点で戻ってくればよいので、はじめは良くクセのわからない国でも、間違いながらも、グルグル回って現地の人の運転を見て、阿吽の呼吸や、どこでどの程度押し込んで入るか、逆にどこを譲るのかなど見ているとそれっぽくなってくる。

以前学生の時、初めてロサンゼルスからアリゾナまで運転した時は、なぜか道を間違ったら、もう終わりみたいに考えていて、ぎりぎりに必死に曲がろうとして、危なく事故りそうになって、現地の人からブーイングを喰らいまくったりしていたけど、1秒でも早く進まなきゃ死ぬ確率がガンガン上がるというよう8000mより上の酸素のないデスゾーンでもないしと考えると、とっても楽。

以前はすべて電車で移動してたけれど、すべてを電車で移動なんてもう考えられない。

I used to be a backpacker whose unspoken rule was how cheaply I could get around the world, and renting a car was a terrible idea, but I’m 45 now. I don’t need to travel in such extreme poverty, so these days I almost always rent a car when I go abroad.

However, I don’t have a car because I live in Tokyo, and in Japan I don’t drive at all, except for ridesharing or hiring cars, except for New Year and when my children are on holiday.

Perhaps it is fortunate that I am not steeped in Japanese traffic rules, but I am relatively flexible in dealing with unfamiliar rules, such as driving on the right side of the road and roundabouts without traffic lights. So even in countries where the driving habits are initially unfamiliar, you can watch local drivers and learn how they drive, how hard they drive and, conversely, when they give way.

When I first drove from Los Angeles to Arizona as a student, for some reason I thought it would be the end if I took a wrong turn, so I desperately tried to turn at the last minute and almost caused an accident, which got me booed by the locals. But it doesn’t matter because we’re not in an oxygen-deprived death zone at over 8,000 metres, so no matter how many mistakes we make, we’re not going to die. If you make a mistake, you can just start again slowly.

I used to travel by train for everything, but now I can’t imagine travelling only by train.
