Winning or losing is not about fitness, but the culmination of your actions, including your failures.
A longer version of the triathlon (Ultraman 10km swim, 420km bike, 84km run) starts next week in Kona, Hawaii. Looking at the entry list, there are a lot of older people – 55 years old is the average, with many over 55. I am currently 45 years old. I am a young man among the competitors.
If had not dared to avoid challenges and failures, would have accumulated a lot of failures after more than 40 years. Failures are also like ‘ah, that case’. It is the same with physical conditions: you start to realise how far you can go with your efforts and how far you can go before your body breaks down.
As you get older, your experiences shape your form in a way that is easy to understand. Especially in events where mental strength is a battle, such as long distance running and high altitude mountaineering, victory or defeat is not a matter of physical strength, but the culmination of one’s actions, including failure. This is why long distance running is so powerful for older people who dare to enter such races.
