Googleマップで死亡
アメリカでGoogleマップが崩壊した橋を通行可能な道路として表示、その結果そこを通過した方がなくなったという。自分も最近はどこへ行くのにも、ほぼGoogleマップだから、人ごとじゃない。
問題の橋は9年前から崩壊していたにも関わらず、それが周知されておらず、バリケードもなかったらしい。この橋自体は、すでに解散した開発会社の所有物で、近隣住民からの長年の通報にもかかわらず、維持管理を引き継いだ地方機関や州機関がなく壊れたまま、さらには何人かの人々が過去数年間、グーグルに橋の崩落を報告していたけれども、グーグルはルート情報を更新しなかったという。
原告は、グーグルに加え、2つの企業と1人の個人が、橋を維持する義務と責任があったにもかかわらず「危険で欠陥のある状態」でそれを放置したとして、訴訟の対象としているらしい。
以前は笑い事として、Googleマップのとおりにいったら道がなく海に落ちたというような笑い話のようなことがあったけれど、今回のような状況、夜道などで、自分が同じ状況なら間違いなく死んでしまう。
Googleマップは、本当に便利で、一番好きなアプリで一番使っているアプリだけれど、過度な依存は問題ありかもしれない。

In the US, Google Maps showed a collapsed bridge as a passable road, resulting in the death of a person passing through. I’m no stranger to this, as I use Google Maps almost everywhere I go these days.
The bridge in question had been collapsing for nine years, but apparently this was not announced and there were no barricades. The bridge itself is owned by a now-defunct development company, and despite long-standing reports from neighbours, it remains broken, with no local or state agency taking over its maintenance, and despite several people reporting the bridge’s collapse to Google over the past few years, Google did not update the route information.
The plaintiffs are apparently suing Google, along with two companies and an individual, for leaving the bridge in a ‘dangerous and defective condition’ despite their duty and responsibility to maintain it.
It used to be a laughable thing when you followed Google Maps and there was no road and you fell into the sea, but in a situation like this, on a road at night, if I were in the same situation, I would definitely die.
Google Maps is really useful and is my favourite and most used application, but over-reliance on it can be a problem.
