鎌倉と梨泰院（イテウォン）

先日、鎌倉へ行った。

海辺を歩いてみたけれど、なんだか心が動かない。新たなカフェが目に入っても、「まあ、いいか」という感じで、特に足を運ぶ気にもなれなかった。

鎌倉は、いつだって素敵な場所のはずなのに。

なんだろう、この気持ちは？

その答えのヒントが、今いる場所にあるような気がする。

実は今、半年ぶりに韓国・ソウルに来ている。梨泰院（イテウォン）エリアにある取引先の眼鏡屋さんを訪ねがてら、街を散策しているところだ。

ここは、東京と同じように、ただの都会の街並みが広がっているだけ。

それなのに、ただ街を歩いているだけで、なんだかワクワクする。

教わったセレクトショップを覗いたり、小さな美術館に立ち寄ってみたり。目に映るもの、耳に聞こえる言葉、街の匂い。そのすべてが新鮮で、心が躍るのを感じる。

ここで、ふと気づいた。

鎌倉で感じた「無」と、ソウルで感じる「ワクワク」。その違いは、おそらく「非日常」のスパイスがあるかどうか、なのだろう。

鎌倉の海は、もちろん美しい。でも、自分にとってはいつでも行ける、見慣れた「日常」の延長線上にある景色だ。だから、心が「感動モード」に切り替わらない。

一方で、ソウルの街は「非日常」のかたまりだ。

看板の文字が違い、すれ違う人々の話す言葉が違い、お金の単位も違う。一つひとつの小さな違いが、五感をフル稼働させてくれる。だから、ただの街角ですら、特別な風景に見えてくる。この「違い」が、脳を刺激するのかもしれない。

旅のときめきとは、絶景や観光名所を訪れることだけがすべてではないのかもしれない。

自分を「日常」から切り離し、「非日常」の空気に浸ること。それ自体が、心を若返らせ、世界を新鮮な目で見させてくれる、最高のエンターテイメントなのだろう。

今回の韓国滞在は、そんな当たり前のことを、改めて思い出させてくれた。

Why I Felt Nothing in Kamakura but Everything in Seoul: A Thought on the “Non-Ordinary”

The other day, I went to Kamakura.

I tried taking a walk by the sea, but for some reason, my heart wasn’t moved. Even when a new café caught my eye, I just felt, “Oh well,” and wasn’t particularly motivated to go in.

Kamakura is supposed to be a wonderful place, always.

What is this feeling?

I have a sense that the hint to answering that question lies right where I am now.

As it happens, I’m currently in Seoul, South Korea for the first time in six months. I’m taking a stroll around the city after visiting a client’s glasses shop in the Itaewon area.

Just like Tokyo, this is nothing more than an urban cityscape.

And yet, for some reason, I feel a sense of excitement just walking down the street.

Peeking into a select shop I was told about, stopping by a small art museum. The things I see, the words I hear, the smells of the city. Everything feels fresh, and I can feel my spirit lifting.

It was then that I suddenly realized.

The sense of “nothingness” I felt in Kamakura and the “excitement” I feel in Seoul. The difference between them is likely the presence of the “spice of the non-ordinary.”

The sea at Kamakura is, of course, beautiful. But for me, it’s a familiar view, an extension of my “ordinary” daily life that I can go see anytime. Because of that, my mind doesn’t switch into “excitement mode.”

On the other hand, the city of Seoul is a mass of the “non-ordinary.”

The letters on the signs are different, the language of the people passing by is different, and the currency is different. Each and every one of these small differences puts all five of my senses on high alert. Perhaps it is this “difference” that stimulates the brain. That’s why even a simple street corner can look like a special scene.

Maybe the thrill of travel isn’t just about visiting spectacular sights and famous tourist spots.

It’s about detaching yourself from “the ordinary” and immersing yourself in the atmosphere of “the non-ordinary.” That act itself is the best kind of entertainment—something that rejuvenates the mind and lets you see the world with fresh eyes.

This stay in Korea has been a fresh reminder of that simple truth.
